Free WordPress themes are often a very bad choice for all of the reasons listed here. But if you choose a reliable vendor, you can be assured that your free theme won’t be malware infested, nor suffer from many of the mistakes made by novice coders. Usually, what separates these free themes from premium ones are features and support. Many of these developers make both free and premium themes, using their free themes to attract paying customers.
Free WordPress Themes
1) WordPress Theme Directory verifies that all themes in the official theme repository are free of malicious code. Support, however, varies greatly among theme developers, and many free themes rely on community support. One way to test developer support is to submit a question BEFORE you try the theme, and see how responsive the developer is.
2) Themify: Free Themes Themify offers free themes as a taste of their premium offerings. When you’re ready to buy they have two deals to entice you: Buy One, Get One, and an all-you-can-eat plan called the Themify Club. This all-our-themes-for-one-price is a popular model among theme developers, and is an excellent value for those with multiple sites or clients.
3) WooThemes: Free Themes Developers of the well-respected WooCommerce WordPress ecommerce plugin, WooThemes also makes free and premium themes.
4) WPExplorer: Free Themes WPExplorer is a well-known source for WordPress how-tos. Many, but not all, of their theme freebies have premium versions available that include support.
5) The Theme Foundry: Make At the core of the free Make theme is a drag-and-drop Page Builder to customize page layouts.
6) Themezee All of Themezee’s premium themes have a free version with fewer features and customization settings.
7) WPMUDEV: 120 Free Premium Themes If you still haven’t found what you want, here’s a mega article listing 120 free themes from trusted developers.
P.S. So what theme do I use? This site is built on the Genesis Framework, using the Metro Pro child theme. Using a framework and child theme makes creating and maintaining my 55+ sites so much easier. But that’s a topic for another day.
